Since I started working here my colleagues often asked me if I've blow-dried my hair. And when I say no they will always nag at me to do it /laugh/. And on many occasions, I will hear them telling their customers too.
So once I've asked Benja, why do you guys stress so much on blow drying?
She told me, "Because our scalp dislike humid environments."
I got even more curious about the scientific reasons so I researched more into it.
To summarize, when our hair and scalp are swollen from too much water it will be weaker and more easily damaged. So it's not that not air drying itself is bad, it's the longer time frame that your hair remains wet and weak when you air dry, it will increase the chances of your hair getting more damage. Another point to add is you may risk fungal infection if you trap too much moisture for too long. 🍄
Also, the scalp plays an important role in keeping your hair looking healthy. Think of the scalp as the soil and your hair as the plant. With the right and healthy soil, your plant roots will stay healthy and they can control the water they adsorb properly, that is how the hair maintains its moisture and strength!
Recently I've listened to their advice and have been diligently drying my hair after every wash, and I have to say, it does make styling a lot easier too! Especially for me who has been bothered by my sleeping flat roots at the tip of my head, it stands much more nicely now when I style my hair. I think the logic of molding while applying heat also applies here other than removing excess moisture from the scalp.
⚠️A BIG 'BUT!' HERE⚠️ Our scalp and hair also dislike high heat and being too dry, so the pointer here is not to use too high heat and to over-dry them! If the soil is too dry it will make your hair dry and also make it easy to rip out your hair, everything in moderation!
So how to dry your hair: Remember, your scalp and hair are still weak because it's soaked wet. So avoid too much pulling and brushing at the start. Gently part your hair, enough for the blow dryer's air to reach your scalp. Get the inner hair parts dry first, once you feel like there is no excess water, you can proceed to dry the rest of the length. If you want to you can start using your brushes here to shape your hair as you dry! And once you feel like it's not wet to the touch you can stop.
Types of hair dyer to use: You will see all those terminologies about ion, ceramic hair dryers, and whatnot. Those are just additional things to make it look even better, which it's more towards the cosmetic territory, so we will not cover this today since I believe the ones reading this are those who aren't obsessed with the flawless look.
The advice from us, especially for the ones with tight budgets. The no.1 thing you want to have in a dryer is low heat (gentle warm kind) and strong air. So ideally you'd want to find one with heat control (a cooling button is a plus too!). Avoid those cheap ones that emit high heat, because seriously you're better off air drying in this case.
And with that, blow dry your hair!! (If possible)
